Professor Alessandro Boccolini and the Fraknói Research Group have maintained a close and sustained scholarly collaboration for more than fifteen years. This cooperation has been centred primarily on the research activities of the University of Tuscia’s research centre devoted to Central European history and the history of the papacy.

One of the principal research priorities of the Fraknói Research Group’s work in the Vatican Archives is the study of relations between the Holy See and Hungary in the late medieval and early modern periods. Accordingly, in recent years members of the Research Group have undertaken significant research into the history of the Battle of Mohács, as well as its antecedents, consequences, and historical memory, particularly in relation to the five-hundredth anniversary of the battle.

On the afternoon of 21 July 2026, István Bácskai (22 July 1956, Szentes) was honoured with a surprise volume at the 'Gondolat Olvasó' in Szentkirályi Street. On this occasion, the celebrant received the festschrift OSIRIS & GONDOLAT: A 70th Birthday Tribute to István Bácskai, edited by Péter Tusor, Csaba Pléh, and Orsolya Szaniszló. Alongside personal recollections and greetings, the volume contains scholarly studies reflecting the diverse academic profile of Gondolat Publishing House. Its distinctive illustrations are the work of István Fábián.

The Vilmos Fraknói Vatican Historical Research Group of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Péter Pázmány Catholic University was established in the June of 2012 as the ‘Impetus’ Church History Research Group in the frame of the Church History Research Institute of the University founded by Rector Péter Erdő in 1999. It carries on independently the latter’s publications (Bibliotheca Historiae Ecclesiasticae Universitatis Catholicae de Petro Pázmány Nuncupatae) and researches in Rome and in Vienna, with the involvement of academic and other funding sources.
